Again and again, hikers encounter such monuments in villages and towns, commemorating the victims of wars (especially the two terrible world wars in the first half of the 20th century). Many people were called to arms to defend their country back then, and many paid for this commitment with their lives. Even a century later, these memorials remain important and carry a message as relevant as ever: keeping the memory alive and thus reminding us to maintain peace is their ongoing mission.
