Vandring

The wing altar is the eye-catcher of the church. It depicts the coronation of Mary by the risen Christ and was probably made around 1475 in the Lübeck tradition. In addition to the apostles in the double doors, two figures of bishops can be seen: on the left St. Nicholas, patron of the church, and on the right, St. Dionysius, one of the 14 helpers in need.

The church was consecrated in 1637. At first it was only half as big as it is today. Niels is the North German short form of Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. (...)

Around 1780, there were about 150 captains on the island, who brought riches to Sylt with the life-threatening as well as lucrative hunt - many old houses still tell about this time.
With the wealth, the population grew. The small church of St. Niels had to be expanded twice in the early 18th century to its current size.
