This sweet little tarn has two small islands in it, and is usually a good place to fish — but make sure you check local fishing regulations before you start casting. The trail to reach the lake can be a little rocky but, since it doesn't intersect with other trails, tends to be one of the quieter lake trails in the area.

While specific day-use permits are not always required for hiking, it's always best to check the latest regulations with the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest or the local ranger district before your visit. Wilderness permits are often required for overnight stays.

Is Maxwell Lake a dog-friendly trail?

Yes, the Eagle Cap Wilderness, including the trail to Maxwell Lake, is generally dog-friendly. However, dogs must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all visitors. The trailhead for Maxwell Lake is located near Shady Campground, accessible via Forest Road 8210 from Lostine. Parking can fill up quickly, especially during peak season (late July to October) and on weekends. Arriving before mid-morning is strongly recommended to secure a spot and avoid congestion.

Can you swim in Maxwell Lake?

While there are no official restrictions against swimming in Maxwell Lake, it is an alpine tarn fed by snowmelt, meaning the water is typically very cold, even in summer. The shoreline is rocky and boulder-strewn. Visitors should exercise caution and be prepared for frigid temperatures if considering a dip.

What kind of wildlife might I encounter around Maxwell Lake?

The area around Maxwell Lake is home to diverse wildlife. Hikers frequently report sightings of mountain goats on the rocky slopes.
