Mount Howard

Mount Howard rises to an elevation of 8,239 feet (2,511 meters). The most popular way to reach the summit area is via the Wallowa Lake Tramway, which provides a 15-minute aerial ride ascending 3,700 vertical feet. From the tram station, a network of short, easy-to-moderate loop trails allows you to explore the alpine environment and tag the actual summit.

Generally, no specific hiking permits are required for day hikes on Mount Howard's trails, especially those accessible from the Wallowa Lake Tramway. However, if you plan to venture deeper into the surrounding Wallowa-Whitman National Forest or the Eagle Cap Wilderness for overnight trips, wilderness permits may be necessary. Always check with the local forest service office for the most current regulations.

While the Wallowa Lake Tramway typically operates seasonally from late spring to early fall, Mount Howard can be accessed for winter activities. However, winter conditions at 8,000+ feet are severe, with deep snow and potential avalanche hazards. Winter hiking or snowshoeing to the summit from the base is a strenuous undertaking requiring significant experience, proper gear (including avalanche safety equipment), and careful planning. The Summit Grill and Alpine Patio are also closed during the winter season.

Dogs are generally welcome on the trails in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, including those around Mount Howard, provided they are on a leash. However, the Wallowa Lake Tramway has specific rules regarding pets. Typically, only service animals are permitted on the gondolas. It's best to confirm their current pet policy directly with the tramway operators before your visit if you plan to bring a dog.

Once you reach the summit area via the Wallowa Lake Tramway, there are several family-friendly options. The 1.2-mile High Wallowa Loop National Recreation Trail is an excellent choice, offering relatively flat terrain and stunning panoramic views. These trails are generally easy-to-moderate and allow for exploration of the subalpine meadows without extensive effort, making them perfect for families.

Mount Howard's diverse montane grasslands and subalpine forests are home to various wildlife. You might spot deer, elk, and smaller mammals like marmots and pikas. Birdwatchers can look for raptors soaring overhead and various alpine bird species. While rare, black bears and cougars inhabit the broader Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, so it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings and practice Leave No Trace principles.

Public transportation directly to the Wallowa Lake Tramway base station is limited. Most visitors arrive by private vehicle. However, during peak season, some local shuttle or taxi services might operate from nearby towns like Joseph or Enterprise to Wallowa Lake. It's advisable to arrange transportation in advance if you are not driving.

The 1,084-acre Mount Howard-East Peak area was designated a National Natural Landmark in 2016 due to its exceptional botanically diverse montane grassland habitats. These unique ecosystems support populations of endemic and rare plant species, such as the Wallowa penstemon (Penstemon spatulatus). The expansive subalpine grasslands, interspersed with whitebark pine and subalpine fir, contribute to its significant ecological value.

While the Summit Grill and Alpine Patio offers a unique dining experience at the top of Mount Howard, the Wallowa Lake area and nearby towns of Joseph and Enterprise offer a variety of restaurants, cafes, and pubs. You'll find options ranging from casual eateries to more upscale dining, serving local cuisine and classic American fare. Many establishments are located along the lakefront or in the charming downtown areas of Joseph and Enterprise.

After reaching the summit area via the Wallowa Lake Tramway, most visitors spend 1 to 2 hours exploring the network of short loop trails. The 1.2-mile High Wallowa Loop National Recreation Trail can be completed in about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the views. This allows ample time to take photos, visit the Summit Grill, and soak in the panoramic vistas.

Mount Howard was named in honor of Civil War general Oliver O. Howard. Interestingly, the mountain is situated almost directly across Wallowa Lake from Chief Joseph Mountain, which is named after Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce. This geographical proximity often prompts reflection on the historical relationship between General Howard and Chief Joseph during a significant period in regional history.
