Vandring
The official name of the cathedral in Madrid is 'Santa María la Real de La Almudena', the construction of which began in 1883. This cathedral is dedicated to the “Virgen de la Almudena”, the medieval icon of the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ and the patron saint of the city. More than a century later, in 1993, the completed building was officially consecrated as a cathedral by Pope John Paul II. For this reason, there is a statue of the pope on the east side of the cathedral.
