Construction took more than a year in the Rheingarten in Cologne's old town. The new Rhine promenade at the Deutzer Bridge was opened just in time for the start of the European Championships. Specifically, 5-meter-wide slabs ("cantilever slabs") had to be placed on the historic embankment wall from 1890 because safety in this section could no longer be guaranteed.
Cyclists and pedestrians still share the path. But it is now a little wider, so there is less chance of getting in each other's way.
