After the horror of the war, the former St. Alban church - like almost the entire city center of Cologne - lay in ruins. A conscious decision was made not to rebuild this place of worship. The church ruins of Alt Sankt Alban therefore stand as a memorial against war and tyranny.

Alt Sankt Alban is a former church and memorial in the middle of the old town. Located on the Quatermarkt, it forms a cultural unit with the Gürzenich and the Wallraff-Richartz Museum.
