"...In the 1950s, up to 100 small coal mines were operating in southern Bochum at times, but they disappeared relatively quickly with the onset of the coal crisis in 1958. The last small Bochum mine, "Küpper Käseberg," near the Kemnader Bridge, closed in 1967.

The Haunert mine, named after its owner Bernhard Haunert, is a typical example of a small mine. Built in 1946, it reached its highest annual production of 17,000 tons in 1952 and employed a maximum of 85 miners. The average, however, was considerably lower.
