The monastery likely existed as early as the Venetian period, although there is little information to confirm this. During the Venetian and Ottoman periods, the monastery is said to have been dedicated to Saint Nicholas.
According to tradition, the resistance fighters Georgios and Petros Kantanoleon were buried in the monastery in 1527; they are the inspiration for Spyridon-Alcibiadis Zambelios' work "Cretan Weddings."

The Monastery of Panagia Chrysoskalitissa (Greek: Μονή Χρυσοσκαλίτισας) is a Greek Orthodox monastery on the island of Crete. It is located 72 km southwest of Chania in the municipality of Innachori on the southwest coast of Crete, on a rock that rises 35 m above the sea.
