In ancient times, Agios Dionysios was a man of distinction and a judge on the Aerophagus, the supreme court. He was converted to Christianity by the Apostle Paul, who baptized him and appointed him patron saint of the city.
The construction of this church dedicated to him started in 1923. This happened on a place where a smaller church had previously stood and in ancient times a temple.
After the cathedral, this is the most important church in the city.
