3,700 of the approximately 11,400 inhabitants of the municipality of Strömsund live in Strömsund, which extends over a huge area with a population density of one inhabitant per square kilometer. The municipality, which is one of the larger municipalities in Sweden, extends approximately 170 kilometers along the Ströms Vattudal lake system on the upper reaches of the Faxälven to the northwest to the Norwegian border. The northwestern part of the municipality lies in the Scandinavian Mountains, while the southeastern part lies in the foreland characterized by lakes.
