Astra is the abbreviation for the Transylvanian Association for Romanian Literature and Culture of the Romanian People. This park, in which numerous busts of important Romanian cultural figures have been erected, was named after the association.

The park lies in the heart of the city, bordered by Fleischergasse/Str. Mitropoliei, George Bariลฃiu-Straรe, Hechtgasse/Str. Ioan Lupaล, and Hermannsplatz/Piaลฃa Unirii.
As early as 1869, the idea existed to create a city garden on the site of the demolished city walls. In 1879, the Beautification Society was founded, and the park was its first major project. It was originally widely known as Soldisch Park.
