    The synagogue was constructed between 1857 and 1859 by architect Jean-Henri Bachofen after the city's Israelite community received official cantonal recognition in 1852.[1] At the time of its opening, the synagogue was still outside the city center and was part of Geneva's new city plans when, in the course of industrialization and the final affiliation to Switzerland, large-scale construction was also carried out outside the city walls and the city was enlarged. In the year it opened, the city's Jews finally received Geneva (and thus also Swiss) citizenship, even though general cantonal religious freedom was only established in 1874
