The mural is an interpretation of this Chur legend:
The Bridegroom in the Cathedral
Long ago, a young man from Chur went to the cathedral to pray on the evening before his wedding day.
It was already late and dark in the great church. Then he noticed a light in the crypt, where the wedding mass was to take place the next day. And he went there to see who was. To his astonishment, he saw a multitude of burning candles of all different sizes before the altar of the crypt.

Vandring
The painting depicts the moment when the young man, now an old man, is on his way to the town hall.
In this image, the cathedral represents the past, St. Martin's Church the future of the man, who is trying to escape the present. We, as viewers standing before the facade, represent a later generation and the distant future of the man in our own present.
The leap in time within the painting is represented by color and objects, as well as by the different times shown in the two churches.
