The Basilica of St. Martin is in Bingen am Rhein in Rhineland-Palatinate on the banks of the Nahe. Since 2002, the Basilica of St. Martin has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley, and it is also a protected cultural asset under the Hague Convention.

In August 1403 there was a devastating fire in Bingen, in which three quarters of the entire town burned down and the venerable Martinskirche was also severely damaged. Therefore, on October 3rd, the clergy of the Martinsstift and the mayors and the council of the city of Bingen sent a circular to the southern German bishops and all Christians living in their dioceses, asking for donations for the reconstruction of the church. In 1416, exactly 600 years ago, the new Gothic building was so far advanced that the choir could be consecrated.
