More than a thousand years of Torgau history include glorious times with the Renaissance, Reformation and Residenz, and dark chapters should not be concealed either. The tour through the historic old town with around 600 individual monuments, with Hartenfels Castle and the churches provides impressive images and insights.
Lots of sights, shops, Germany's oldest toy shop, lots of good restaurants......

As a former seat of Electoral Saxony in the 16th century, Torgau was able to preserve many magnificent buildings from this heyday and today is one of the most beautiful Renaissance towns in Germany.

What does the name Torgau mean?

The name comes from French and means "slope". In particular, this referred to the sloping terrain in front of fortifications. In the years 1811 – 1813, Emperor Napoleon ordered Torgau to become one of the largest fortresses in Germany.
