The memorial for the social democratic politician Karl Seitz in the 1st Rathauspark was unveiled on April 28, 1962 by Mayor Franz Jonas. It is located in the Nordpark near the Ringstrasse. The bronze statue was created by Gottfried Buchberger. The monument was donated by the "Seitz Monument Association". The ceremonial speech was held by Vice Mayor Hans Mandl. Burgtheater actor Attila Hörbiger recited a prologue by Josef Luitpold Stern. The musical accompaniment came from the music bands of the city of Vienna.

The social democrat Karl Josef Seitz (1869 to 1950) was a member of the Reichsrat from 1901, then in 1918 one of the three equal presidents of the Provisional National Assembly for German-Austria and from March 5, 1919 to December 9, 1920 the sole head of state of the republic. From 1923 until his arrest in 1934 he was mayor of Vienna. After the Second World War he was again a member of the National Council. The SPÖ appointed him honorary chairman.
