The construction of the palace wing east of Sundhoka, called the "Palace of Fifty-Five Windows", was started in 1697 by King Bhupatinath Malla. It is said that it took 58 years to complete - during the reign of his son King Ranjit Malla in 1754.
The palace wing has a surrounding wooden gallery on the upper floor, which is said to contain 55 windows. This floor collapsed during the earthquake of 1934 but was then rebuilt but not in its original shape.
