The Goðafoss or Gods Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland. It is located in the district of Þingeyjarsveit in the northeast of the country near the beginning of the Sprengisandur highland runway.
According to legend, Gode Þorgeir allegedly threw the last pagan images of gods into the Goðafoss around the year 1000 AD after the assumption of Christianity as state religion. Hence the name (god waterfall).
A stained glass window in Akureyri's church (Akureyrarkirkja) recalls this story.
