Around 9,000 hectares of land in the North Sea spa town of Bensersiel are drained through the sewage works. The inland area is drained with the help of the Benser Deep and at the same time protected from salty sea water and floods. The lifting gates of the over 30-year-old sewage works automatically control the water levels at low levels. Only at low tide can the gates drain around 30 million liters of water into the North Sea. One of Hieronimus' constant tasks is to monitor external and internal water levels, wind direction and wind speed.
