The beautiful fountain is located at the entrance to the Arboretum Park, also known as the Rentenwiese. It is located in the Enge quarter on the western shore of Lake Zurich and is part of the Quaianlagen. The park was reclaimed from the lake. Today the arboretum is mainly used as a leisure facility and as a bathing facility in the summer.

The mosaic fountain at General-Guisan-Quai / Beethovenstrasse at the entrance to the arboretum was formerly called Brunnen am Alpenquai and is also known as Bluntschlibrunnen. It was created by the architect of the same name, Bluntschli, who designed many other fountains in addition to the Enge church. The monumental fountain created in 1909 is adapted to the forms of the Italian early Renaissance. The rear wall with mosaic inlays and domed roof is striking. In 1959, the spring water well was connected to the drinking water distribution network and was slightly renovated for the last time in 1977.
