Rising to an elevation of 428 meters, this elevated green oasis offers unparalleled panoramic views of the winding Limmat River, the iconic Grossmünster Church, City Hall, and even the distant Alps. Lindenplatz is a great place to meet up with friends and enjoy the view of the old town. Events are also often held here. For me, it is one of the most beautiful places in Zurich to relax.

The grave dates from the 2nd century. For the gods of the dead: Lucius Aelius Urbicus, who lived for 1 year, 5 months and 5 days, is buried here. His father, Unio, was a freedman of the emperor, head of the TVRICVM station of the Gallic customs and Aelia Secundina. Even then, there was great grief, and the grave still reads (the parents, for their sweetest son). The original stone is now in the state museum, and in 1986 the neighborhood association had a copy made, which now stands here.

    Ofte stillede spørgsmål

Is Lindenhof suitable for visitors with limited mobility or wheelchairs?

While the Lindenhof itself is a car-free zone with generally easy terrain, it is situated on a hill. Access from the surrounding streets involves some inclines. The main square is paved and relatively flat, making it navigable for wheelchairs once you reach the top. However, some of the historical remnants or paths leading up might present challenges. Public transport drops you close, but a short ascent is still required.

    Are dogs allowed at Lindenhof?

Yes, dogs are generally welcome at Lindenhof. It's a popular spot for locals to walk their dogs. Please ensure your dog is kept on a leash and that you clean up after them to maintain the cleanliness and tranquility of this historical site and public park.

What are the best public transport options to reach Lindenhof?

Lindenhof is exceptionally well-connected by public transport. It's just a short walk from Zurich Main Station (Hauptbahnhof), which is a major hub for trains, trams, and buses. Numerous tram lines stop within a few minutes' walk, such as those serving Paradeplatz or Rennweg. Its central location in District 1 (Altstadt) makes it easily accessible from almost anywhere in the city.

How long does it typically take to explore Lindenhof?

The time you spend at Lindenhof can vary. A quick walk around the main square to enjoy the panoramic views and see the historical markers might take 15-30 minutes. However, many visitors choose to linger, relax on a bench, play chess, or simply soak in the atmosphere, easily spending an hour or more. If you combine it with exploring the surrounding Old Town, you could spend half a day or longer in the area.

Are there any cafes or restaurants directly at Lindenhof or nearby?

There are no cafes or restaurants directly on the Lindenhof square itself, preserving its tranquil, green oasis feel. However, due to its central location in Zurich's Old Town, you'll find a wide array of cafes, restaurants, and pubs just a few steps away down the surrounding streets, particularly towards the Limmat River (Schipfe quarter) and Bahnhofstrasse.

What unique historical features can be seen at Lindenhof?

Beyond the panoramic views, Lindenhof offers tangible links to Zurich's past. You can see remnants of the Roman fortress walls, which formed the foundation of the city. A notable feature is the copy of a 2nd-century Roman tombstone, bearing the oldest known inscription of "Turīcum," the Roman name for Zurich. The original stone is in the Swiss National Museum, but the copy on site provides a fascinating glimpse into the city's ancient origins.

Is Lindenhof a good place for families with children?

Yes, Lindenhof is a great spot for families. It's a car-free, safe, and open space where children can run around freely. The historical elements can spark curiosity, and the panoramic views are enjoyable for all ages. It's also a pleasant spot for a picnic, offering a peaceful break from city sightseeing.

What activities are available at Lindenhof during winter?

Even in winter, Lindenhof remains a beautiful and accessible spot. While the linden trees are bare, the panoramic views of the snow-dusted Old Town, Limmat River, and distant Alps can be particularly stunning. It's still a peaceful place for a winter stroll, and if there's snow, it adds a magical touch to the historical setting. The outdoor chess tables are also often in use, weather permitting.

How crowded does Lindenhof get, especially on weekends or holidays?

Lindenhof is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, so it can get quite busy, especially on sunny weekends, public holidays, or during major events like the Sechseläuten festival in April. For a more tranquil experience, consider visiting early in the morning or later in the evening. Weekdays, particularly outside of peak tourist season, generally offer a more peaceful atmosphere.

Are there any hidden gems or lesser-known spots around the Lindenhof area?

While Lindenhof itself is a well-known gem, the surrounding Altstadt (Old Town) is full of hidden alleys, charming courtyards, and small boutiques. Explore the narrow streets leading down to the Schipfe quarter along the Limmat River for picturesque views and unique shops. The area around St. Peter's Church, just south of Lindenhof, also offers quaint streets and historical buildings often overlooked by those sticking to the main thoroughfares.
