Pitstone Windmill is thought to be one of the oldest windmills on the British Isles, probably dating from before the carved inscription of 1627 found on its frame. Designed as a post mill, the upper section of the mill and sails could be turned towards the wind.

The windmill was in operation for three centuries until 1902 when a gale damaged it beyond repair. Commencing renovations in 1963, local volunteers brought the windmill to its current beautiful state.
