The West Bohemian Theatre in Cheb has a long tradition of theatre. The oldest preserved theatre text, the Chebská play about the body of God (Chebská Corpus Christi Play), was first performed in 1442. It was performed regularly until 1517. On May 13, 1872, the town council commissioned the Cheb architect Karl Haberzettel to build a new theatre building based on a design by Vinzenz Pröckel. On October 3, 1874, the theatre was officially opened with a performance of two parts of Schiller's Waldstein trilogy.
