Rock roofs are also known as abris after the French word abri for protective roof or half cave. There are at least 1600 of these in the sandstone landscape around Göttingen. Due to sporadic finds, an early presence of humans / Neanderthals has long been known in these places. The Abri Walterstein I has been archaeologically examined. Settlement remains from the Young Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age were found in the subsurface.

Vandring
The rocks of Reiffenhausen are in the form of rows of cliffs in the mountain slopes above the valley floors. The heights of the rocks are between 4 and 17 m. The rocks are steep and compact, often with large overhangs.

Vandring
Impressive sandstone rock formation in the middle of the forest with nice views and very nice to rest.
The last 500 m are a bit tedious to walk, which are still not 100% cleared of storm damage - here and there scrambling over a tree is part of it.
