The Poelestraat in Groningen runs from the Grote Markt to the Diepenring. Originally it was mainly a shopping street, nowadays it is one of the most important entertainment centers in Groningen.
In the Middle Ages - then as Polstraat - the street ran from the Hondsrug to the meadows in the bed of the Hunze. 'Pol': higher ground, also known as wierde (compare: Paddepoel). Excavations in 1989 found road surfacing from the 11th century onwards. The street is first mentioned in 1325.
