The Plaza de Armas in Cusco was the center of the earth, or the navel of the world, in Inca times. Today the square is surrounded by magnificent colonial buildings, the two churches La Catedral and La Compañia are of course eye-catchers, they are the tourist highlights on the plaza.

What are some recommended short walking routes starting from Plaza de Armas de Cusco?

From Plaza de Armas, hikers can easily embark on short walks to explore the historic center. A popular route involves strolling through the colonial arcades, visiting the Cusco Cathedral and the Church of the Society of Jesus, and then heading towards the San Blas neighborhood, known for its artisan workshops and narrow, picturesque streets. Another option is a walk to the nearby Qorikancha (Temple of the Sun), which offers a deeper dive into Inca history.

What is the general terrain like in Cusco city, especially around the Plaza de Armas?

While the Plaza de Armas itself is relatively flat and easy for walking, the surrounding city of Cusco is built on hilly terrain.
