The baroque monastery of Santo Domingo was built on the remains of the sun temple of the Incas (Coricancha). Parts of the original masonry can still be seen today.
The monastery has now been converted into a museum. Numerous exhibits of the Incas are exhibited. The culture of the Incas such as annual planners etc are explained very well here. You can also find art by current local artists or school classes here.

Very well preserved and maintained. We were there with a guide and learned a lot about the history of this place.

Juan Pizarro, brother of Francisco, donated this land with the Inca temple to the congregation. He had received the land as part of the land distribution in October 1534. The congregation was founded that same year and was the first Dominican monastery in the territory that later became Peru. Construction of the first monastery building was completed in 1610.
The first prior of the Santo Domingo Convent was Brother Juan de Olías. He occupied it with a group of Dominican missionaries from Mexico. The monastery collapsed completely during the severe damage caused by the Cusco earthquake on May 12, 1650.
