The former official castle, Saaleck Castle, stands on a mountain spur. The oldest parts of the castle date back to the 12th century. This includes the keep, a tower about 22 meters high, which has been accessible as an observation tower since 1998. On clear days you have a wonderful view over the Saale valley and into the Rhön.

The castle / chateau has been linked to viticulture for centuries. Today the facility is part of a winery. However, as it was owned by the Fulda bishopric for centuries, it was not only used for defense but also had an economic connection to the surrounding vineyards. Many buildings only date from the 19th century, the keep is much older (probably 13th century), from where there is a wonderful panoramic view of the Saale valley, the Hochrhön and the city of Hammelburg.

In 1922, it served as a hiding place for the assassins of German foreign minister Walther Rathenau. Later, during the Nazi regime, a memorial plaque was erected, and their grave was turned into a 'heroes' shrine.'
