The port was the largest and most important transshipment point on the Teltow Canal. After the Wall was built, the Teltow Canal was administered by the GDR. The port lay idle, only the storage building was restored and used by the West Berlin Senate. The old district of Teltow, owner of the harbor and the canal, became Teltow Fläming, Potsdam Mittelmark and Dahme Spreewald. After the fall of the Wall there was a dispute between the three districts and Berlin. Finally, the current usage concept was agreed upon.
