Stone channels, also called growing stones, are formed by lime deposits from flowing water. While otherwise limestone tufts usually occur flat or in wide arches, you have to deal with a linear increase in the direction of the flowing water. A stream usually digs into its bed due to the erosive power of the flowing water. In the case of stone channels, on the other hand, the stream bed is increased by lime separation.

The Steinerne Rinne is a rare natural phenomenon that was created by karstification.
Such limestone formations are very sensitive; it takes at least a year to build up a three-millimeter-thick layer. This karst phenomenon only occurs in places where very lime-rich, carbon dioxide-rich water comes to the earth's surface.
