Vandring

The Felsenkeller is the former ice cellar of the Nagelschmidt brewery. It is inscribed and dated to the year 1858. It is a gothic brick architecture as a cladding of the tunnel entrance in the mountain. The neo-Gothic windows and the gate form the partitioning of the wall. In the western entrance there is a pointed arch tympanum with a relief of brewery tools. In the mountain there is a 15 m high main cavern with two side arms that were blasted into the rock.

In 1858, Anton Nagelschmidt, Bürvenich brewery owner, had a huge, multi-part ice cellar blown up in the Eifel slope below his villa for beer cooling. Before the invention of cooling technology, rock cellars cooled with winter ice were often used to keep beer or wine cool because of their consistently low temperature.
