The Neoclassical guardhouse was built in 1772 on the banks of the Großer Wallloch (Great Wall Hole). It was designed by the architect Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff while construction of Wörlitz Palace, which he oversaw, was still underway. The ground floor has always housed a hearth; otherwise, it was used to store equipment for flood control.
The elegant upper floor, with its stucco-profiled walls, served as temporary accommodation for Prince Franz. From here, he enjoyed the view across the water to the west, towards the palace and St. Petri Church.

The landscape design he created under his rule, together with his friend Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff, encompassed not only palaces, parks, and gardens, but also flood protection measures along the Elbe and Mulde rivers.
Thus, the rampart guardhouses built between 1770 and 1800 were also integrated into the landscape design.
Today, they are gems along the cycling and hiking trails of the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
