The Abdinghof Monastery, a former Benedictine abbey, existed from its foundation by Bishop Meinwerk of Paderborn in 1015 until its secularization on March 25, 1803. The monastery was culturally significant due to its library, the attached school, the hospice and the workshop for book illustrators and bookbinders. Shortly before the end of the Second World War, an aerial mine and incendiary bombs destroyed the church and the buildings of the former monastery. In 1951, the rebuilt church was consecrated again. Today it is the main church of the Protestant parish of Paderborn.
