The medieval Ston is built strictly geometrically. The streets and apartment blocks are all at right angles to each other. There are many bars and restaurants in the alleys of the historic center.
Ston is known for its oysters and shellfish as well as fish dishes and wine.

The medieval town of Ston has the longest stone wall in Europe. With a length of 5.5 kilometers, Ston has the second largest surviving defensive wall in the world, after the world famous Great Wall of China. The wall goes up to the castle above the city. The history of Ston dates back to the 14th century, when the walls were built to protect the salt production facilities and the controllable access to the Pelješac peninsula.

After the acquisition of the peninsula Peljesac the then rulers of Dubrovnik began in 1333 with the construction of the 5500 meter long fortification wall, which includes seven semicircular bastions and 41 towers. Three fortresses were built at strategically important points.
