A Lughaus/defense tower is a historical fortification, which was built primarily for defense. Defensive towers served to protect cities, settlements and castles and offered a significant defensive advantage due to their elevation above the surrounding terrain. Defense towers close off with an open or covered defense platform to enable the use of long-range weapons of all kinds. Standalone Lughouses were very rare as they were much more efficient when built into a wall. Nevertheless, there were portholes to protect important junctions or bridges, although in this case they also served the function of a watchtower.

The Lughäuser or Wall Towers, also known as Soft, Wieck or Lukhäuser, were important points in the defense system. On the Bernau town wall built in the 13th and 14th centuries there were four semi-circular and 38 square, open or closed log cabins. They offered space for up to 10 armed men on connected levels, who fought the attackers with long-distance weapons (crossbows, later rifles) through loopholes or with stones and hot liquids through hatches.
