Smith Mountain can be checked off the list. We hiked that one this morning. Took 4 hours, and was 6.8 miles round trip, 1700' vertical gain, topping out at a summit altitude of 5,111'. The first mile was a descent and steady incline gaining altitude fairly quick. The second and third miles were an easy flat-to-gradual ascent. It was the last 4/10 of a mile that was the challenge... no trail, a section was Class 2 scrambling (needed hands and feet to scramble up the rocks) and bushwhacking. And then you still had to go down...

Tahquitz Canyon is one of the more culturally sensitive areas of the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation. Tahquitz Canyon is home to a spectacular seasonal 60-foot waterfall, rock art, ancient irrigation systems, native wildlife and plants.

A decent day-hike to knock out a couple of local Sierra Club Hundred Peaks Section peaks: Thunder Mountain 8,857' and Telegraph Peak 8,985'. Took the Baldy Ski Lift up to the Notch and did the hike from there.

This was a multi-day backpack trip, led by the Sierra Club, and what a fantastic trip. Thursday night we car-camped at Horseshoe Meadows campground, and the next morning, which was the 4th of July, we hit the trail. As we crossed Trail Pass, we dropped our packs and made the detour up to the summit of Trail Peak, 11,605'. Incredible views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. Back down and onward to our first campsite. Saturday morning, we broke down camp and continued on another 7 miles to the next campsite. After setting up camp and having lunch, we day-hiked over to the nearby volcanic cinder cones to see and learn about the volcanic history of this area. Hiking to the summit of these cones was quite the exercise as the volcanic soil/rock is a bit loose. Sunday morning was another day hike to another cinder cone, this one with large volcanic rock to navigate and climb. The top is horseshoe-shaped illustrating how the volcanic caldera broke open and lava flow across the valley a long time ago. Finally we broke down camp and began the hike back. We went to the same camp site as Friday night. Monday morning was the last day, and we broke down camp and hiked back to our cars. What a FANTASTIC trip!

The monthly hike for our group was at the Puente Hills Preserve. This is the best time of year to hike this area as everything is still green from the recent rains, and the temperatures were ideal. At times the trail was pretty busy with other hikers, but with the wide paths, it's not an issue.

Wow, Tahquitz Falls! That trail has such a calm yet powerful vibe I can almost hear the water from your post. I love places like this where nature feels sacred and raw.
I usually explore on a bike, but hikes like this remind me how grounding it is to slow down and take each step.
