The massive thatched oak roof truss withstood wind and weather for several decades. However, the last exposed timbers collapsed during the severe storm in the winter of 1978/79. Since the supra-local importance of the ice cellar had been recognized and acknowledged, the municipality of Jersbek decided to restore the ice cellar in 1979.

Behind the vestibule is the actual circular about 7 m deep egg funnel. The diameter tapers with increasing depth from about 6 m to 3.10 m. The icemaker was filled in each late winter with ice, which was obtained from the nearby Gutsteich.
