From 1617 to 1781 the castle was the residence of the noble family of Württemberg-Neuenstadt. From 1781 the castle was uninhabited. However, it was used as a fruit store and from 1806 to 1815 it served as barracks for a garrison stationed in Neuenstadt. Furthermore, the Dürnitz building was the seat of the Cameral Office from 1829. In the 19th century the corner tower served as the seat of the forestry office and as the forester's residence. Since 1958 the Neuenstadt open-air theater has taken place every summer in the castle moat.

The city tower has a square floor plan with sides measuring 8.45 m and a height of 37.5 m. The walls are 1.30 m thick all around up to a height of 12 m, and 1 m thick above that up to the start of the roof.
