The lake's main tributary, the Schwentine, flows into the western part of the lake, separated by the Bebensund Bridge, the Fissau Bay, and flows out again a little further west.

Two islands lie in the Great Eutin Lake: the so-called Love Island and Pheasant Island, which marks the origins of settlement in this area and was a focal point for the former Baroque gardens at Eutin Castle. It is now inhabited and privately owned.

The entire area is characterized by the hilly moraine landscape of Holstein Switzerland.
