Fort Tolukko is a small fortress on the east coast of Ternate. It was one of the many fortresses built to control the clove trade. Before the 18th century This fruit was only found on the Maluku Islands. The fortress was occupied alternately by the Portuguese, the native Sultanate of Ternate, the Dutch, the British and the Spanish. The fortress was abandoned in 1864 and renovated in 1996.
