Begun as a basilica in the 13th century, it was completed as an important hall church at the beginning of the 14th century. After that, the church was constantly further developed: 15th century wall paintings, 16th century new pulpit, 19th century altar grate wall in neo-Gothic shapes.

The St. Marien Church is one of the largest north German hall churches, it shapes the silhouette of the university and Hanseatic city of Greifswald and is a stop on the European route of brick Gothic along the Baltic Sea coast. The building impresses with its size and clarity, its subtle colors and its valuable inventory items.
The church is popularly known as "Fat Marie".
