The church was built between 1873 and 1880 under British Bishop Edward Steere. It stands on what was once the center of the slave trade; the altar is on the exact spot where slaves used to be flogged. A memorial and museum next to the church commemorate human trafficking at the time.

Yürüyüş
This church is not on this spot, but as described on the site of the former slave market. This in turn is marked on the map under the wrong term "Old Fortress".
