Nestled amidst centuries-old trees lies the roughly 30 by 30 meter former moated castle, "Schloss Altenmuhr." It is undoubtedly one of the oldest and most interesting castles in the upper Altmühl Valley, not least because it was immortalized in Schiller's "The Robbers" in 1781 and served as a filming location for the 1974 film "The Robber Hotzenplotz."
The oldest parts, the tower and the main building, date back to the 12th century. After several structural alterations in the 15th, 16th, and 19th centuries, the castle is privately owned by the von Le Suire family.
