It was one of the earliest founded new cities of Al Andalus, becoming the Islamic capital of the region (854-1147), due to its privileged location next to the old main road that linked Córdoba with Toledo.

We are in one of the oldest Islamic cities on the Peninsula, already mentioned in the times of Abderramán I, in 785, which reached great splendor in the s. IX when it became the capital of a large Muslim region. True to its origins, it took advantage of the Guadiana River to build a hydraulic defensive system.

It is a walled city of about 5 ha. of extension, which increase to 25 ha. by the extensive neighborhoods that were built outside the walls. I was surprised by the scope that can be seen from its plateau, which the castle once had.
