There used to be a dam on the Ourthe at this location. It supplied the watercourse that ran around the island with the water that was then fed to the paddle wheels of the mill. The dam consisted of a structure with vertical wooden piles, which were filled with stones from the river. The present fountain shows a cross-section of the shape of the dam.
