The worship of three female deities, referred to here as Matrons, dates back to the time before the Romans. However, after conquering parts of Gaul and Germania, the Romans integrated the old cults into their world of gods. Even in the Roman era, the Matrons continued to be worshipped and temples dedicated to them. This is also the case here in front of the Hirschberg.

First references to Roman sanctuaries in this region have been known since the late 19th century. At that time, farmers had come across early medieval stone slab graves while plowing, in which consecration stones had been used for a second time.
