The tower was built in 1998 for the World Expo 98. True to the motto of Expo 98 (“The Oceans: A Legacy for the Future”), the tower is intended as a memorial to the seafarer Vasco da Gama and expresses the ties between the Portuguese and the sea: the base extends into the Tejo like a ship's bow inside, the steel construction represents the sail of a caravel, the tower body (with the panoramic restaurant) is like a mast with a lookout.

Lisbon's tallest skyscraper offers legendary views of the city. The 140-meter-tall Vasco da Gama Tower is located on the riverbank in Parque das Nações. Its billowing sail shape recalls the many Portuguese ships that set sail from the Tagus River to distant lands. Designed by architects Nick Jacobs and Leonor Janeiro, it dominates the landscape of this waterfront area.
