Unlike what one might think, the greatest attraction of ancient Rome was not the Colosseum but the Circus Maximus.
In fact, the Flavian Amphitheater was built over 350 years after the Circus Maximus, underlining the fact that the true passion of the Romans was horses and chariot races rather than gladiators.
And, if the Colosseum could hold between 50 and 80,000 people, the Circus Maximus had a capacity almost five times greater, even reaching 250,000 seats; which makes it probably the largest structure for shows and sporting events ever built in the history of mankind.
