The connection between the Kehrwiederspitze, part of Hamburg's warehouse district, and the old town is established by the Kornhaus Bridge, the Niederbaum Bridge and the Brooks Bridge over the Customs Canal.
The Kornhausbrücke, at the southern end of which the Customs Museum is located, is characterized by two statues from 1903 depicting the seafarers Columbus and Vasco de Gama and at the northern end of the bridge provide an indication of Hamburg's overseas trade.
Unfortunately, the southern statues of Cook and Magellan are no longer preserved. It is one of the so-called truss bridges made of steel.

The customs canal in Hamburg runs along the northern edge of the warehouse district and formed the customs border between the old town and the former free port area until 2003.
At the end of the 19th century, it was expanded from existing waterways (inland port, Dovenfleet, Mührenfleet, Oberhafen) into a shipping canal in order to bypass the free port area newly created in 1888.
The customs canal thus connected the customs inland, while the free port area was customs abroad.
